The Edward Betham C of E Primary School

Worship

Daily Collective Worship is an important part of our school day.

Daily Collective Worship is a valued and integral part of our school life. It is a time when we come together as a community to pause, reflect, and refocus on what is most important. During worship, we explore the truths and values that shape who we are as individuals and as a school family. It is also a time to share and celebrate the life of our school – our achievements, our relationships, and our growth – and to offer our praise and thanks to God.

Our Collective Worship is rooted in our school vision inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:13:

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
Through our times of worship, we seek to nurture faith – faith in God and in each other; to inspire hope – hope for our future and for the world; and to live out love – the love that is shown through kindness, compassion, and service to others.

Daily Collective Worship at our school follows a structured yearly journey inspired by our vision of Faith, Hope and Love. Each half term explores a key spiritual focus through biblical stories, Christian festivals, and special celebrations. Music, reflection, prayer and pupil participation bring worship to life across both the Infant and Junior departments.

Our Collective Worship is inclusive and invitational, offering space for all pupils and staff—of all faiths and none—to pause, reflect, and engage in ways that are personally meaningful. Everyone is encouraged to take part as much as they feel comfortable, whether through listening, praying, singing, or simply reflecting quietly. Our worship celebrates the diversity of our school community while remaining rooted in our Christian foundation.

Worship is offered to God in a variety of ways – as a whole school, within Key Stages, or in class. Each gathering provides a different opportunity to learn, reflect, and respond. Collective Worship follows a weekly Biblical theme that supports our vision and values, helping children make meaningful connections between faith and everyday life.

Worship is usually led by members of staff, but children also play an active role in planning, presenting, and participating. Each class prepares and leads worship once a year, often using drama, music, storytelling, and prayer to share their learning and faith journey with others. The clergy from Holy Cross Church regularly lead our masses in the church, helping to strengthen our link with the local parish, and we welcome a range of visitors who bring fresh perspectives and experiences of faith. During Black History Month (October) and Asian History Month (February), we welcome guest speakers to speak during worship.

Through our daily worship, we aim to create a sense of belonging, reverence, and joy – a time when everyone can experience what it means to live out faith, hope, and love in action, both within our school community and beyond.

Parents/carers are invited to attend our mass presentations and class led worship. Three times a year we join together as a whole school to worship in Holy Cross Church.

Parents/carers will have chosen a church school for their children because of the ethos, special opportunities for worship and learning about the Christian faith. However, under the 1944 Education Act parents do have the right to withdraw children from RE and Worship.
