The Houses of Parliament

The School Council of The Edward Betham CofE Primary School went on a trip to the Houses of Parliament where we met our Member of Parliament and had a very nice tour.

James Murray (our MP) approached us just before our tour and welcomed us, even giving us some information about how Parliament gifted the Queen a stained-glass window with a lion (representing England) and a unicorn (representing Scotland) on it. After that, we made our way to a room separating us from the two Houses, where there were statues of different Prime Ministers. Winston Churchill was one of them and he looked grumpy, as he was on a pile of rubble, representing Parliament after it was bombed during World War II.

Soon after, we made our way to an area where people of the House of Commons come to discuss a law. Afterwards, we went into the House of Commons itself and saw where every role sat, then made our way to a room filled with portraits of the royalty of the past. Underneath that room was where Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament.

Then, we entered a room with a huge golden throne (for the Queen) and we were all stunned by the sight of the bright gold.

Overall, we were very happy to have been able to go and see the Houses of Parliament. It was an experience that none of us will ever forget.
