Spirituality at Edward Betham

We believe that every human is unique and loved for all that they bring to the world.  We see spiritual development as an integral part of being human. As such, we believe that nurturing the spiritual development of each and every pupil and member of staff is an important part of our vision as it will equip us to live full and happy lives.  Developing spirituality strengthens our development into being brilliant humans, regardless of our religion. Everyday experiences (both good and bad), opportunities to develop awe and wonder, concerns about others or our planet, lead to deep questioning and it is this questioning that is the doorway to spiritual development.  As adults, we believe the most important things we can do are listen to children and value their insights into the world around us.  We believe seeing through the eyes of children is a powerful way for us all to grow spiritually.

Shared understanding of spiritual development

As a church school, it is this Christian framework that shapes our shared understanding of spirituality and spiritual development. We recognise the importance of engaging with our linked church in determining this shared understanding in the context of our school’s Christian vision and values.

To make conversations about spiritual flourishing more accessible to every member of our school community, The Edward Betham Church of England Primary School has chosen to use the following shared understanding of spirituality and spiritual development.

At The Edward Betham Church of England Primary School, we believe spirituality enables us to become aware of one another, the world around us and ourselves, while providing space for everyone to explore their own beliefs, values and sense of meaning, whether rooted in religious faith or a non-religious worldview.  It is the nurturing of our inner lives, providing us with the foundations to voice questions, doubts and wonders. Ultimately, spirituality helps us to look beyond material things, such as money and possessions, and to focus on what is truly valuable: our relationships with others, our connection with the world around us, our sense of purpose and meaning, and our understanding of ourselves. For some, this may be rooted in faith and a relationship with God; for others, it may be expressed through personal values, beliefs and a sense of connection to something greater than themselves.
