The Edward Betham C of E Primary School

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Edward Betham we believe that all children should receive an education appropriate to their needs.

Intent

At Edward Betham, we are committed to nurturing every child as a unique individual, created in the image of God and deeply loved. Rooted in our Christian vision, we believe that faithhope, and above all love, should underpin every aspect of our inclusive practice.

At Edward Betham, we

  • Provide a fully inclusive and supportive environment where all children, regardless of their needs or disabilities, are empowered to flourish academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

  • Celebrate diversity and ensure every child feels valued, safe, and supported as a cherished member of our school family.

  • Remove barriers to learning, fostering resilience, independence, and confidence, enabling all pupils to make progress and reach their potential.

Implementation

  • Class teachers work closely with the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCO) to ensure early identification and assessment of needs so that timely and effective support is tailored to each child.

  • Class teachers, SENDCo and the family work together to produce personalised learning plans and strategies that reflect the individual child’s strengths, challenges, and aspirations.

  • We use a graduated approach, following the ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ cycle, in line with the SEND Code of Practice (2015).

  • We provide high-quality inclusive teaching across all classrooms, with staff trained in adaptive strategies to support a range of learning needs.

  •  Skilled support staff work closely with teachers to deliver targeted interventions, provide in-class support, and build strong, trusting relationships with children to help them access learning and thrive.

  • We apply for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) where a child’s needs are significant and long-term, and when additional, sustained support is required beyond what the school can provide from its own resources.

  • The SENDCo works closely with external agencies, including educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists, to provide specialist guidance and interventions.

  • We foster a nurturing ethos, where emotional well-being, self-esteem, and positive relationships are prioritised, in alignment with our Christian values.

  • We prioritise a close partnership with parents and carers, recognising them as key partners in their child’s learning journey.

Impact

We measure and review the impact of our SEND provision regularly.  We aim to see:

  • Children with SEND making good progress from their individual starting points, academically and in their wider development.

  • Increased engagement, confidence, and independence in learning for pupils with SEND.

  • Positive well-being and resilience, as children grow in faith, hope, and love within our supportive Christian community.

  • Strong relationships built on trust, respect, and compassion between pupils, staff, and families.

  • An inclusive culture where diversity is embraced, and all children are prepared for life in all its fullness – ready to contribute meaningfully to their communities with courage and joy.
