The Edward Betham C of E Primary School

80th Anniversary of VE Day

On VE Day, pupils from Edward Betham were invited to the special VE Day service in St. Leonard’s Church for the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

During the service, Reverend Erica explained the events of the service, after welcoming everyone. It started off with a hymn and then a few readings, read by a police officer and a member of the British Legion. The readings felt like the readers knew God existed and he helped people through the difficult times of World War II. It was a special way of celebrating their 6 years of service.

This service showed the raw emotions of how people would have felt during that disastrous time. I felt that many lost a person close to them and they wanted to bring them back by remembering them. It showed how lucky we are that we don’t have to fight for our country (or have to ration our food), because the world needed for that to happen for world peace.

After the service of remembrance, we proceeded to the war memorial with people who have served the country (firefighters, soldiers and police). Schools and other people from the local community placed wreaths of poppies. When I placed the poppies on the memorial, it felt like an act of service that you could do to honour those who gave their life to serve this country. It was a lovely moment of peace when everyone put their wreaths down and saluted fallen comrades.   Frank, 6OM
